Working with Spain: what the hours do not tell you
Forty hours, and every one of them on record
The Workers' Statute caps ordinary working time at 40 hours a week, averaged over the year (art. 34). Since 2019 every employer must also keep a daily record of each employee's start and finish times (art. 34.9). A government bill to cut the week to 37.5 hours was voted down in Congress on 10 September 2025, so 40 remains the ceiling.
Many Spanish offices work a jornada partida: a morning block, a long lunch from around 14:00, and an afternoon that can run past 18:00. In summer many switch to a jornada intensiva, one continuous day that ends in the early afternoon. For central-government staff it is written down: between 16 June and 15 September, six and a half continuous hours between 08:00 and 15:00. A 16:00 call to Madrid in July can find the office empty.
Mainland Spain lies almost entirely west of Greenwich, yet keeps Central European Time. An order of 7 March 1940 moved the clocks forward an hour to run with the rest of Europe, saying the normal time would be restored in due course; it never was. The sun rises and sets late, which is part of why the Spanish day runs late. The Canary Islands keep the hour behind, all year.

What this changes when you schedule
Spain keeps the Saturday and Sunday weekend, so the days line up with most of Europe and the Americas.
The day also runs later than the nine-to-five most tools assume: 09:00–18:00 rather than 09:00–17:00.
A national convention for offices. Individual employers, shift work and retail vary.
