Working with India: what the hours do not tell you

New labour codes, a 48-hour week

Four Labour Codes took effect on 21 November 2025, replacing 29 older laws. Working time is capped at 48 hours a week, with the daily limit set between eight and twelve hours depending on how the week is arranged. States are still notifying their own rules, and office hours for shops and establishments have always been a state matter, so the detail still differs between Maharashtra, Karnataka and Delhi.

Saturday is not always a day off

This page treats Saturday as a rest day, which is true of most corporate and IT offices. It is not true everywhere. Banks close on the second and fourth Saturday of each month and work the others, under a government notification in force since 1 September 2015, and many smaller firms and public-facing offices keep a six-day week. Before assuming a Saturday is dead, ask.

Working with India

Hours you share with India, computed from each country's own working day rather than a blanket nine-to-five.

What this changes when you schedule

India keeps the Saturday and Sunday weekend, so the days line up with most of Europe and the Americas.

The day also runs later than the nine-to-five most tools assume: 10:00–19:00 rather than 09:00–17:00.

A national convention for offices. Individual employers, shift work and retail vary.

Sources and last check

Times, offsets and sun positions on this page are computed live from the IANA timezone database and the NOAA solar algorithm, so they do not depend on the review dates below.
